DPR Celebrates the Grand Opening of Arkins Promenade – City and County of Denver

Mayor Michael B. Hancock, city officials, project partners and community celebrated the completion of the Arkins Promenade, an Elevate Denver Bond supported project, that creates a new space along the South Platte River for open space, recreation, and leisure activities, along with improved visual and physical access to the natural resources and regional trails along the river. 
Denver Parks and Recreation transformed Arkins Court, an industrial backroad along the South Platte River from 35th to 38th Avenues, into Arkins Promenade, a key part of a mile-long riverfront pedestrian corridor that will run between 29th and 38th Streets. The linear park includes amenities such as walking and bicycle access, river theater, gathering and play areas, an elevated walkway along the river, public art, and overlooks with seating areas. The promenade also provides outdoor spaces with landscaping, shade trees, native grass areas, and planters to filter stormwater management that improves the water quality in the South Platte River. 
“The people of Denver, and their overwhelming yes votes for the Elevate Denver Bond, made this unique new outdoor experience a reality,” Mayor Hancock said. “Arkins Promenade will be a transformative investment for the community and all Denver, revitalizing what was once industrial space into a premiere outdoor destination that will foster healthy lifestyles and ensure the surrounding communities continue to thrive.”
Arkins Promenade complements adjacent mixed-used development, provides access to two of Denver’s newest parks, Globeville Landing and the newly constructed park at 35th St. and Arkins Court, and creates an important connection between the growing Five Points neighborhood and other surrounding communities such as Globeville, Elyria-Swansea, and the South Platte River Trail. 
“Arkins Promenade provides a place for leisure, outdoor recreation, connection to the river and a flexible festival space,” said Happy Haynes, Executive Director of Denver Parks and Recreation. “Thanks to the vote approved Elevate Denver Bond Program, Denver Parks and Recreation is fulfilling its mission to enhance the health of Denver residents and the environment by creating safe, beautiful, and sustainable places.”
Funding sources for the project include the Elevate Denver Bond and the Denver Parks and Recreation Capitol Improvement funds. In November 2017, voters approved the General Obligation Bond (Elevate Denver) which allocated $5M for the Arkins Promenade project with the remainder funded by the Denver Parks & Recreation Capital Improvement Fund.
