BAY CITY — People who worked at St. Laurent Brothers years ago now come back with their grandchildren for an assortment of candy and other sweet treats.
One hundred-plus-year-old St. Laurent Brothers, at 1101 North Water Street in downtown Bay City, is now looking for new owners. Both the retail business, which is popular for Michigan travelers, and the building are listed for sale at $1.65 million as a package.
St. Laurent Brothers, also known as the Nut House, carries a complete line of roasted nuts, from almonds to cashews to macadamias, in addition to candy, at its downtown factory outlet.
Realtor Melissa Beckrow said she is confident the historic building and iconic business will find a new owner.
“You’re looking at a person (a potential buyer) that wants to have a part of its iconic image in Downtown Bay City,” Beckrow said. “All the inquiries that I’ve had have been such that they’re interested in real estate as well as the business.
“I think most Bay City (residents) in their heart and soul want that. This is the purpose of selling both together.”
The business, open since 1904, will remain in operation. But co-owner Steve Frye, 70, plans to retire. He became a part owner in 1985.
“It’s really heartwarming, because everybody really cares. It’s a very rare opportunity, considering this has only had two owners in 119 years,” said Beckrow.
The building was constructed in 1865, according to the Frye family. The approximately 21,900-square-foot property includes Saginaw River waterfront access. There are five docks for 10 boats, according to the listing. In the summer season, the docks are available for rental. The lot size is .57 acre.

Other developments are taking place near the property. North Peak Brewing, which has more than 10 locations, intends to redevelop a space nearby for a bar, restaurant and living space, according to Beckrow.
Nancy Frye, office manager and Steve’s wife, said this was a hard decision for Steve. They will miss activities downtown. But they have five grandchildren with whom they would like to spend more time.
“We have things going on almost every weekend,” Nancy said. “There are people walking around, enjoying all the different shops that we have downtown. Because of the customers, it was a really hard decision.”

“They (people in the area) are excited to have an opportunity to be a part of this and let it (the business) live on for another century,” said Beckrow.
