From the host to the awards date!
Oscar buzz is already in the air, and while it may be some time before we know which films, performers, and creators will be competing for the movie industry’s most coveted gold statues, plans are already in the works for what the next awards show will look like.
Today, it was announced that Jimmy Kimmel will be returning for his third stint as host of the awards show in 2023. "Jimmy is the perfect host to help us recognize the incredible artists and films of our 95th Oscars. His love of movies, live TV expertise and ability to connect with our global audiences will create an unforgettable experience for our millions of viewers worldwide," the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president JanetYang said in a joint statement. "With Kimmel, [producers Glenn] Weiss and [Ricky] Kirshner’s fresh perspective and masterful guidance, the Oscars will celebrate its rich 95-year history, the collaborative nature of moviemaking and our diverse, dynamic and deeply creative community of filmmakers."
"Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap," Kimmel said. "Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no."
The news comes after news broke earlier this year that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s new CEO Bill Kramer planned to put more of a focus on "live TV expertise," per the
Hollywood Reporter. The statement is presumably a nod to the fact that, for the past two years, the Oscars have been helmed by film creatives—director Steven Soderbergh and film producer Will Packer, respectively. Some have also suggested, in the wake of the infamous moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on the air during the 2022 awards presentation, that the unexpected outburst might have been better handled for telecast if the producers had more experience with the unpredictability of live television.
The ceremony is currently scheduled to be held on March 12, 2023, though few other details have been released about the event.
We will continue to update this post as new information becomes available.
