CLEVELAND, Ohio — Springfield Township police officers shot and killed a 38-year-old property owner in an exchange of gunfire.
The officers involved in the shooting and the property owner who was killed have not been identified in the incident that happened at 11:30 a.m. at a home on East Waterloo Road, near Canfield Road, according to a statement from the township’s police.
Police were following up on an investigation into a zoning law violation at a home in the township when the property owner shot at the officers, the release says.
The officers fired back, striking the property owner, the release says. He was taken to Summa Health System-Akron Campus where he died from his injuries about an hour later, according to the office of the Summit County Medical Examiner. An autopsy will be performed Thursday.
No officers were injured during the incident, but they will be placed on administrative leave per department protocol.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
Police declined to release further details.
