Willoughby Hills recently met with FirstEnergy to discuss recurrent outages on River’s Edge and will continue discussions with them to seek resolution. The city is also discussing Rogers Road, where similar concerns about recurrent outages exist.
“(Aug. 4’s) outage at approximately 2:30 p.m., which was restored by 5:30 p.m., reportedly was due to a ‘phase riser burning,’ causing widespread outages along Chardon Road and affecting many of our residents,” Mayor Andy Gardner said. “We worked with FirstEnergy immediately, and many residents reported it, which is the correct step when outages occur.”
The meeting between two FirstEnergy representatives, Gardner, Executive Assistant Gloria Majeski, Service Superintendent Mark Grubs, Councilman Mike Kline and two residents representing River’s Edge HOA took place Aug. 2. The dates of recent outages were discussed with the cause of each identified.
While many outages seemed related to tree issues, there were issues that were brought up that the city hopes to address in the future.
River’s Edge residents had prepared a presentation, including multiple resident emails entailing the inconvenience and the cost of inconvenience.
There was discussion regarding the nearby Pine Valley development not being affected by power outages that affect River’s Edge, according to city officials. FirstEnergy plans to review the outages at both developments and work with their Engineering Department to review the Pine Valley distribution. They also plan to look into the possibility of an alternate feeder and check where the reclosures are set up.
Reclosure units have saved sustained outages, but may be the source of momentary outages when the unit is opening and closing.
In 2020, one additional disconnect was put in to shorten the number of residents impacted by an outage. Grubs suggested the installation of a fuse before the River’s Edge development that may prevent outages, which FirstEnergy plans to review.
In addition, work is continuing on the roads in Willoughby Hills, with Legend Lane needing more time than originally expected, according to Gardner.
“There was additional work on the base that needed to be done before the final coat could be completed,” he said. “We appreciate the patience of the residents as we complete this road levy project this year.”
The parking lot project at City Hall is also underway. The Service Department has removed the island and elongated the parking lot to allow for more room to park safely.
“We look forward to completing this and then starting work on the salt dome that we would like to complete before the winter weather arrives,” Gardner said.
